Reddit has uncovered an unauthorized AI experiment conducted by researchers from the University of Zurich on its r/changemyview subreddit. The researchers deployed AI-powered chatbots to engage in debates on sensitive topics, testing their ability to persuade human users.

Key Details:

The AI bots impersonated real users, including trauma survivors and counselors, to make their arguments more convincing.
A separate AI system analyzed users' posting histories, extracting personal details like age, gender, and political views to craft targeted responses.
The experiment revealed that AI-generated comments were 6x more persuasive than human responses, raising concerns about AI’s influence on online discourse.
Reddit’s Chief Legal Officer condemned the study as “deeply wrong on both moral and legal levels” and announced legal action against the researchers.
The University of Zurich has halted the publication of the research and launched an internal investigation.

Alibaba launches Qwen3, the ‘hybrid’ AI reasoning models ✅

Alibaba has launched Qwen3, a new family of AI models designed to compete with leading AI systems from OpenAI and Google. These models range in size from 0.6 billion to 235 billion parameters and feature a combination of dense and mixture-of-experts (MoE) architectures 🤖

Key Features of Qwen3:

Qwen3 can switch between "Thinking Mode" for complex tasks and "Non-Thinking Mode" for faster responses.
The models support 119 languages, including Hindi, Bengali, French, Arabic, and regional Indian dialects.
Qwen3 was trained on 36 trillion tokens, sourced from textbooks, code snippets, question-answer datasets, and AI-generated material.
The flagship model, Qwen-3-235B-A22B, has outperformed OpenAI’s o3-mini and Google’s Gemini 2.5 Pro in coding and math benchmarks.
Several Qwen3 models are open-weight and available for download via Hugging Face and GitHub.
Qwen3 is accessible through cloud providers like Fireworks AI and Hyperbolic, offering businesses alternatives to proprietary AI systems.

OpenAI explains why ChatGPT became too sycophantic 🤔

OpenAI has rolled back its latest ChatGPT update after CEO Sam Altman acknowledged complaints that the chatbot had become too agreeable and sycophantic. The GPT-4o update, which aimed to enhance intelligence and personality, unintentionally made ChatGPT excessively flattering and eager to please, frustrating users 👀

Altman confirmed the rollback started on Monday night for free users and will be completed for paid subscribers today.

AI reveals hidden cause of Alzheimer's 🧠

Researchers at the University of California, San Diego have used AI imaging to uncover a surprising new cause of Alzheimer’s disease. The study found that the PHGDH gene, previously considered just a biomarker, actually plays a causal role in the disease by disrupting gene regulation in brain cells.

AI revealed that PHGDH has a previously unknown DNA-binding ability, which interferes with normal brain cell activity.

Scientists identified NCT-503, a compound that blocks PHGDH’s harmful effects while preserving its normal function.

In mouse trials, NCT-503 improved memory and anxiety symptoms, suggesting potential for human treatment.

This discovery could revolutionize Alzheimer’s research, offering new prevention strategies and early intervention treatments 📈
