DeepSeek, a Chinese AI startup, has made significant waves in the tech world with its latest AI model, DeepSeek-R1 🤖 

This model has quickly risen to the top of Apple's App Store charts in the US, surpassing ChatGPT as the most downloaded free app.

DeepSeek's AI models are reportedly as powerful as those from leading companies like OpenAI, but they are developed at a fraction of the cost and with far fewer chips.

The release of DeepSeek-R1 has caused a significant impact on financial markets, with Nvidia's share price dropping over 12% in pre-market trading. This is because DeepSeek claims to have trained its models using only about 2,000 specialized Nvidia chips, compared to the 16,000 or more required by other leading models. This has led to questions about the compute-intensive approach favored by many of the world's leading AI companies.

DeepSeek's success has also raised concerns about the future of US dominance in the AI sector. The company's ability to develop high-performance AI models at a lower cost has led to a sharp sell-off in Wall Street's tech sector, with major losses for companies like Nvidia, Meta, and Microsoft.

This has also sparked fears among investors that US companies might face stiffer competition and margin pressures in the AI market.

The emergence of DeepSeek has been compared to the "Sputnik moment" of the AI industry, highlighting the potential for significant disruption in the global tech market 👀 

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has also praised DeepSeek's R1 model, calling it "an impressive model” 👀 

Grok 3 seemingly went live for some users 🤔 

xAI’s next flagship AI model Grok 3 might be nearing release. Over the weekend, several users on X, including reverse engineer Alexey Shabanov, reported gaining access to Grok 3 via X’s Grok chatbot app 📱 

Before their access was revoked, the users say that they managed to get the model to respond to a range of queries, including logical reasoning and coding-related questions.

According to the users, Grok 3 was able to successfully answer riddles and field requests like “Generate HTML and JavaScript code for a roulette wheel casino.” However, the model wasn’t perfect and made a programming error in the code for the roulette wheel 🧑‍💻 

Shabanov also revealed that Grok 3's system prompt explicitly states Donald Trump is the 47th president of the U.S., which could be a hardcoded fix for Grok’s political hallucinations.

Grok 3 has been in development for several months and was optimistically slated for release last year, according to Musk. Early this month, Musk said that Grok 3 had completed pre-training, a crucial stage in a model’s development cycle, and that he expected Grok 3 to arrive in January or early February. 

xAI has been using its enormous data center in Memphis, containing around 100,000 GPUs, to train Grok 3. Musk claimed that Grok 3 was trained with “10x” more compute than Grok 2 📈 

OpenAI has added its o1 model to Canvas ✅ 

OpenAI has recently integrated its o1 model into the Canvas feature, enhancing its capabilities for coding and creative tasks 🧑‍💻 

With the addition of the o1 model, users can now leverage its advanced reasoning capabilities for more accurate and reliable results, especially in STEM-related tasks.

The o1 model can be selected from ChatGPT’s model picker and then used with the “/canvas” command. This integration is available to users subscribed to the ChatGPT Plus, Teams, and Pro plans 👀 

In addition to the o1 model support, Canvas now also supports rendering HTML and React code, making it a powerful tool for developers. This feature allows users to visualize React applications and HTML pages, experiment with UI elements interactively, and see the visual outputs of their code instantly ✅ 

Canvas is now available on the ChatGPT desktop app for macOS across all subscription tiers. This means users can access Canvas by tapping the enter/slash command in the prompt area. However, free users will not have access to the o1 model.

iOS 18.3 is out! Here’s everything new 👇️ 

Apple has released iOS 18.3, bringing several changes to AI notification summaries on iPhones. Here are the key updates:

1. Temporary Disablement for News and Entertainment Apps: Apple has temporarily disabled notification summaries for news and entertainment apps due to issues with incorrect summaries.
   

2. Italicized Text for Summaries: Notification summaries will now appear in italicized text to help users distinguish them from regular notifications.
   

3. Apple Intelligence Enabled by Default: For devices that support Apple Intelligence (iPhone 15 Pro and later, iPads and Macs with the Apple Silicon M1 chip or later, and the latest iPad mini), the updates will switch Apple Intelligence on by default.
   

4. Visual Intelligence Enhancements: Users can now use Visual Intelligence to add events to the Calendar app from posters or flyers and easily identify plants and animals.
   

5. New Settings for Managing Summaries: New settings allow users to manage notification summaries directly from their lock screen.
   

6. Security Fixes: The update also includes key security enhancements and patches for vulnerabilities.

You can download the iOS 18.3 update by heading to Settings > General > Software Update.
