FRESH AI NEWS

Apple pauses AI notification summaries 📱 👀

Apple has temporarily paused its AI notification summaries for news and entertainment apps after facing backlash for generating inaccurate news alerts. The company is making changes to the notification summaries to enhance transparency and accuracy.

The decision comes after the BBC complained about a false alert that misrepresented an article, stating that Luigi Mangione, the man charged in the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, had shot himself.

This incident, along with other inaccuracies, prompted Apple to disable the feature in the latest developer previews for iOS 18.3, iPadOS 18.3, and macOS Sequoia 15.3 👀

Apple plans to re-enable the feature in a future update after refining it. In the meantime, all notification summaries will be shown in italics to distinguish them from regular notifications, and users will be able to disable notification summaries for specific apps directly from their Lock Screen

OpenAI tests phone number-only ChatGPT signup

OpenAI has started testing a new feature that allows users to sign up for ChatGPT using only their phone numbers, without the need for an email address. This feature is currently in beta and is available only in the United States and India.

However, there are some limitations to this new signup method:

  1. Users who create an account using their phone number cannot upgrade to paid plans like ChatGPT Plus or Pro without verifying their account via email.

  2. Multi-factor authentication is not supported without a valid email.

  3. Once a phone number has been used to create an account, it cannot be reused to create another account.

OpenAI has stated that there are no plans to expand this phone number-only signup feature to other regions at this time.

Google is making AI in Gmail and Docs free, but…

Google has announced that all AI features in Gmail, Docs, Sheets, and Meet are now available to Workspace customers at no extra charge. However, this comes with a price increase of about $2 per month per user for all Workspace plans 👀

Previously, customers who wanted to use all of Google's AI features needed to pay an additional $20 per user per month for the Gemini Business plan, on top of the $12 for the Workspace Business Standard plan. Now, the standard plan costs $14 per user per month 📈

The AI features include email summaries, automated note-taking, generated designs for spreadsheets and videos, and access to the Gemini bot, which can help with finding information and searching across your stuff.

This move is part of Google's strategy to compete with other companies like Microsoft, which has also integrated AI features into its standard Microsoft 365 subscription.

The new pricing takes effect for new customers immediately, and existing customers will see changes starting March 17, 2025. Small business customers are exempt from these pricing changes for now

MiniMax releases industry’s best competitive models 📈

Chinese AI company MiniMax has recently unveiled three new AI models that it claims are competitive with the industry's best. These models are:

  1. MiniMax-Text-01: A text-only model with 456 billion parameters, designed to outperform models like Google's Gemini 2.0 Flash on benchmarks such as MMLU and SimpleQA. It boasts an extremely large context window of 4 million tokens, allowing it to analyze around 3 million words in one go 📈

  2. MiniMax-VL-01: A multimodal model that can understand both images and text. It rivals Anthropic’s Claude 3.5 Sonnet on evaluations requiring multimodal understanding, like ChartQA. However, it doesn't quite best Gemini 2.0 Flash on many tests.

  3. T2A-01-HD: An audio generator optimized for speech, capable of generating synthetic voices in 17 different languages and cloning a voice from just 10 seconds of an audio recording.

MiniMax's new models are available for download from GitHub and the AI development platform Hugging Face, although they are not truly open-source as the necessary components to recreate them from scratch have not been released. 🤔
