OpenAI’s most advanced AI model yet 🤖 

On Friday, OpenAI unveiled its latest AI models, o3 and o3-mini, as part of its 12-day "shipmas" event (yes, they skipped o2 because of copyright reasons).

Being successors to o1, o3 models are designed to solve complex queries with improved accuracy and efficiency, making them more powerful than their predecessors 💪 

The o3 model family includes the standard o3 and the smaller, distilled o3-mini, which is fine-tuned for specific tasks. OpenAI claims that o3, under certain conditions, approaches artificial general intelligence (AGI), although this comes with significant caveats 🤔 

The models are currently in internal safety testing, with external researchers invited to apply for testing until January 10 📆 

The o3 models are expected to outperform existing models in various domains, including science, mathematics, and coding. They have shown impressive results in benchmarks, such as achieving an 87.5% score on the ARC-AGI test and outperforming the o1 model by 22.8 percentage points on SWE-Bench Verified.

OpenAI plans to launch o3-mini by the end of January, followed by the full o3 model. The company is also working on a new technique called "deliberative alignment" to align these models with its safety principles 🤝 

Google Search to get an “AI Mode” 🔍️ 🤖 

Google is reportedly planning to introduce a new "AI Mode" to its search engine, integrating its Gemini AI chatbot directly into the search experience 🔍️ 

This new feature will allow users to switch to AI Mode from the top of the results page, providing a conversational interface similar to the Gemini chatbot.

The AI Mode will be accessible via a tab on the left side of the existing "All," "Images," "Videos," and "Shopping" tabs. When activated, it will display conversational responses alongside links to related web pages, and users will have the option to ask follow-up questions. This mode will also support voice-based queries, allowing for hands-free interaction ✅ 

What’s wrong with GPT-5? 👀 

OpenAI's development of its next major AI model, GPT-5, is reportedly facing significant challenges and delays.

According to a report by The Wall Street Journal, the model, code-named Orion, has not yet met the high expectations set by its predecessors. Despite completing at least two large training runs, the results have not justified the enormous costs involved 👀 

While GPT-5 can perform better than previous models, it hasn't advanced enough to justify the cost of keeping the model running. 

The project has also been impacted by internal challenges, including the departure of key executives and researchers. Despite these setbacks, OpenAI continues to work on improving GPT-5, with hopes that it will eventually meet the high expectations set for it. ✅ 

Grok to get a standalone app 📱 

Elon Musk's AI company, xAI, is testing a standalone iOS app for its Grok chatbot, which was previously available only to X users.

The app is currently live in Australia and a few other countries in beta. It can access real-time data from the web and X, offering generative AI features like rewriting text, summarizing long paragraphs, answering questions, and generating images from text prompts ✅ 

The app is designed to be maximally truthful, useful, and curious, providing answers to any question, generating striking images, and offering deeper insights through uploaded pictures.

xAI is also preparing a dedicated site, Grok.com, to make the chatbot accessible on the web 🌐
